What if I told you that a solution to fixing schools, was right in front of us, cost next to nothing, and will create clarity, focus, and follow through?

It may be a hike to get there, but the process and the product will be worth it…
It may be a hike, but the process and product are worth it…

How about this, what if I told you that this very same free and super effective school solution, was even used by some of the biggest and most successful businesses and brands out there today?

What if I told you, that this very same method, made the term, “just google it…” not only our go to, but a plausible solution for everyday research no matter the concept or area — because Google used it. So did adobe.

In fact, John Doerr wrote Measure What Matters, which follows the process of creating and implementing OKR’s (Objectives and Key Results) and its successes in businesses like Netflix and Amazon, enabling them to be what they are today. This system creates over arching objectives that are visible and enable staff to work towards meeting them in ways that explore their strengths and foster grounds for new areas of growth in so many ways.

As a school leader, what if I told you that all you had to do, was implement the OKR system into your leadership style, and you will increase communication that revolves around school wide objectives? You would meet with your staff regularly. Everyone would know school goals and how they play a part in meeting them. Everyone would have buy in. Everyone’s collaborating.

If you implemented a system of check in’s, you would have follow through, in which equally shared responsibilities are revisited, as SMART goals guide this process as well, making this hard to not get correct.

When I think about Doerr’s points and his system, I can’t help but to wholeheartedly think that this replaces your current and most likely outdated observation system — all together. What would it be needed for? Teaching, the pedagogy that is implemented and the style and efficacy therefore — a version of that is most likely always going to be a teacher’s part in this.

We are going to dive into this, and I’m going to break this up into categories so we do it correctly. This week, let’s get into the Objectives, let’s dive into Key Results, we’ll cover check in’s and that process, and conclude with why this can transform your school — so you can ask yourself 2 questions:

  1. Will this system really transform my school and right my wrongs, so I have school wide vision with a unified staff?
  2. How can I use the Traveling Principal to help me incorporate this process into my school?

Either way, I’d love to chat with you all about it, please reach out to me via email, thetravelingprincipal@gmail.com,

Tuesday, we’re chatting all things Objectives, and how this can begin to show you why your current evaluation system should change.
